After You Have Suffered A Little While… 1 Peter 5

6Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, 7casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. … 10And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.
This passage reminds me of the misconception some have about Christianity in general and Salvation in particular (and I myself am sometimes guilty of forgetting) — the idea that once we commit our lives to Jesus the Christ all our cares and troubles will just melt away. According to the Scriptures (and personal experience), when we commit to Christ that is when we can expect the trouble to start.
Standing for Christ can sometimes suddenly make us public enemy number one. Jesus isn’t very popular in many circles, mostly because of the narrow road HE preached and the requirements for Salvation.
The Christians in Asia Minor (modern day Turkey) to whom Peter addressed his letter knew about this first hand, and his letters were meant to encourage them during their trials and tribulations (persecution from the state). Unfortunately, things haven’t changed very much for some Christians with respect to persecution and lack of religious freedom. In many countries in Asia and North Africa, for example, there are stories every day about brothers and sisters being killed or imprisoned or tortured for their confession of and faith in Jesus Christ as LORD.
Life is not easy for many of us…and it never has been since Jesus walked the earth. But it is as Jesus intended.

As for Jesus’ own household, his family didn’t even believe HE was the Christ and some even thought HE was crazy (although this changed for a some of them).

So why should the servants expect to be treated differently than the MASTER?

The wonderful thing is, though, we suffer before GOD and HE IS mindful of HIS people. The world surely hates Christ Jesus (you can’t say his name, pray to HIM or read HIS Word without problems in some places). As the world hates Jesus Christ, it also hates HIS people. But what is the world?

GOD’s people whom HE has chosen out of the world must suffer some trouble, persecution, etc. just as our LORD and SAVIOR Jesus Christ did. But GOD IS good not to let us endure these trials alone. If we remain faithful to HIM, HE will be faithful to bring us through…

The promises GOD made to our brothers and sisters in the old days apply to each and everyone Christ Jesus has since redeemed. And if Jesus pressed on to Calvary, enduring right through the end, then we have to try our best (with GOD’s help) to keep pressing on, too — no matter the hurdles or storms. As Jesus knew what glory awaited HIM when the FATHER’s will would be accomplished (“It is finished!”), so do we know why we hope and in WHOM we hope.
